This past weekend, your Aventura CPA Scott Sander, had the pleasure and honor of performing at a cancer fund raising event on Long Island, NY. I was fortunate enough to be invited to play with my good friend’s high school rock band for the third-annual Katie Oppo Memorial Run/Walk charity event in Long Island. The event was organized by Manhasset resident Liz Oppo, whose 19-year-old daughter, Katie, a pre-med student at Johns Hopkins University, died of ovarian cancer in 2011. Liz has raised over $150,000 for cancer research.
The members of the Great Neck South high school band, “The Rockets” have been playing together for 40 years. The band led by Barry Douglas, M.D., keyboardist and a partner at Long Island Plastic Surgical Group, a firm with offices in Manhasset and Garden City, performed following the 6.19k run/walk on Sunday, June 23rd in Flower Hill Park, Manhasset.
Other members of the band are my friend Corey Bergman, a retail consultant now living in Sunny Isles Beach, Florida, Alan Pomerantz, a music industry consultant living in Manhattan, and Eric Kraus, an attorney with Phillips Lytle LLP, a Long Island resident.
“It’s amazing to me that a bunch of guys could come together again,” remarked Douglas. “When we first heard about the benefit, we immediately decided to play and help raise awareness for Katie’s cause. We are honored and hope that through our music we are playing a part in supporting the research effort.”
As for me, it was a privilege to play for such an incredible cause with great musicians who have all become new friends.
